I am so exited to finally be able to share this secret project that I have been working on. The fine folks over at Procreate asked me to try a very early version of their BRAND NEW Animation software to see what I could do with it.

It’s called Procreate Dreams and all I can say is: WOW! – For portable software on an iPad it is incredibly robust and the price point is a game changer! Be sure to watch their reveal keynote below. It will be available to everyone on November 22nd.

Speaking of the keynote I had NO IDEA that my little short was going to be included as the climax of the event. They kept that a complete surprise and I found out in the audience just like everyone else. So a HUGE Thank You to James, Georgie, Nate, LJ & all of the amazing crew over at Procreate.

In just a few weeks I was able to create the animation above. This is actually the first piece of animation that I’ve been involved with that has gone all the way through to color since “The Bear & The Hare” and this is the first fully colored & finished animation that I’ve produced entirely in house. (Don’t worry though I am also still hard at work on “Snow Bear” and that is coming ASAP).

I also want to give an extra special shout out to Max Mueller who did the amazing job on the score! Max is a wonderful young composer and working with him on this project was a total joy! He has a great future ahead of him in the film world. Watching him record the score with a live orchestra was breath taking! Be sure to check out his website: HERE

I’ll have a full reaction video to the news later this week. Plus, I am pleased to announce that I will have a FULL Course on Animating In Procreate Dreams available the day the software drops! (or very soon thereafter).

About Aaron Blaise

For 21 years Aaron worked with Disney helping to create some of the greatest animated films ever made. During that time he worked as an animator or supervising animator on "The Rescuers Down Under", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Lion King", "Pocahontas", "Mulan" and more. In 2003 he was co-director of "Brother Bear" for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. After "Brother Bear" he helped to develop several projects but ultimately left Disney to pursue an opportunity back home in Florida. Aaron recently served as 2D Animation Supervisor and Character Designer for the "The Bear and the Hare" an advertisement loved by millions around the world. He is currently also working on a new animated short film, once again involving bears called "Snow Bear".

  1. Aaron, your short in “Dreams” is amazing!, glad to see your work in this revolutionary technology, it is well deserved that you are, once again, part of something that will make the world a better place, for us creatives!, as the Lion King was for my teenage years,
    well done!

  2. Hello Aaron, I was wondering, if you did all of the penguin animation in procreate dreams only, the coloring, inking etc. Because trying it out now on my own, I run into the problem that I cannot switch the layers in order to color drop my colors on a reference layer, like it was possible in procreate.
    Thank you,
    Nette

    1. We did not use color drop. We painted each frame by hand on a layer below the line layer. Just like you would do on a Disney film.

  3. Great article, Aaron! It’s amazing to see the capabilities of Procreate Dreams in your new animation. The attention to detail and the final output are truly impressive. I’m curious about your creative process: how did you find working with Procreate Dreams compared to traditional animation software? Also, could you share more about the specific challenges you faced while animating with this new tool and how you overcame them? Thanks for your post — I found it inspiring.
