Course Details:
Join acclaimed Disney animator, director, and artist Aaron Blaise as he reveals the secrets of Drawing Animals from Life! Drawing on his extensive background—which includes contributions to Disney classics like “The Lion King,” “Pocahontas,” “Mulan” and directing “Brother Bear”—Aaron takes you on location to observe and sketch animals in their natural settings.
You’ll watch as he draws dogs at a park, studies the movement of horses (even those with riders), and ventures into the wild to capture the essence of alligators. He’ll share strategies for quick gesture drawings, tips for understanding animal behavior, and methods for breaking down anatomy and proportions into manageable shapes. You’ll also see how museum visits can deepen your understanding of skeletal structures and help you grasp the fundamentals of form, weight, and movement.
What’s Inside the Course:
- Introduction & Materials: Aaron outlines the course structure, demonstrates the tools he uses, and discusses the importance of observational drawing for improving your animal art.
- Animal Anatomy Basics: Learn to break down complex anatomical features into simple shapes, compare different species’ structures, and understand how skeletal and muscular systems inform your drawings.
- Gesture & Quick Sketching: Discover how rapid studies capture energy, movement, and posture. Aaron shows you how to get the “feel” of an animal before refining details.
- On-Location Observation: Follow along as Aaron sketches live animals at zoos, wildlife parks, and in nature. Learn techniques for dealing with changing poses, limited time, and unpredictable animal behavior.
- Proportions, Posing & Personality: Understand how to measure and map out animal proportions, adapt them for different species, and convey mood and personality through body language.
- At-Home Drawing Sessions: Practice on pets or local wildlife for a low-pressure environment. Aaron demonstrates how to capture familiar subjects and study their unique characteristics.
- Detail & Texture Rendering: Move from loose sketches to more refined drawings. Learn to depict fur, feathers, scales, and subtle shading to bring your illustrations to life.
- Advanced Topics & Animation Tips: For more experienced artists, Aaron dives into dynamic poses, action scenes, and even introduces basic animation principles to help you understand locomotion.
- Museum Visits & Skeletal Studies: See how drawing from mounted skeletons at a natural history museum sharpens your anatomical knowledge and helps you grasp the underlying structure behind every pose.
