I wholeheartedly recommend these lessons both if you’re taking your very first steps into animal drawing or, if you’ve already grasped the basics but are interested in a Master’s approach. Aaron Blaise is certainly a master in what he does, and explains his process with warmth and clarity.
I have yet to come across other lessons or tutorials that come even close to what he does and has to offer.
It’s a pleasure to learn like this and keeps you curious and hungry for more… so, why stop at bears?

From my first tottering steps in watercolor 12 years ago, I went through phases- first only flowers, then landscapes, until finally I settled on things with eyes. I’ve done a few portraits which I like, but I really love to paint animals. It really doesn’t matter which ones as long as they have eyes. I have never had consistent, always available instruction; but all that has changed now.
Aaron teaches in a clear and methodical manner, he has a seemingly bottomless well of knowledge about anatomy, as well as what the animal’s different body parts do when it moves in various gaits. My drawing now is based on the supporting structures of bones and muscles which makes it that extra bit more realistic. Aaron’s years as an animator has given him so much more experience in drawing and conveying emotions and gestures and you could not find a more experienced teacher.
His use of Photoshop in his videos is so easy to view and follow. I take screen shots as I follow along in whichever course I am watching so that I can go back and re-draw my sketch over and over from his reference material. I have found that the more times I do a sketch over, I get better, quicker, and more able to spot mistakes in proportion and anatomy.
I started with bears, because I was working on a grizzly bear painting. I am so happy with my drawing (although Aaron would spot my many mistakes in a heartbeat), and I am already planning my next painting of a grizzly bear.
I am confident that any of his other courses will give me the same benefit.

This was so much fun to see how the director of Brother Bear drew bears.
I drew along with Aaron for each and every bear he drew in this lesson and I think I feel comfortable in saying I know how to draw bears now.
Gonna move onto his anatomy course now.
