Large Leopard in Watercolor & Ink captures the power, grace, and fluid movement of a leopard striding through its environment. The animal’s powerful anatomy is balanced against a light, open composition, allowing the intricate pattern of the coat and the gesture of the pose to take center stage.
Aaron combines transparent watercolor with expressive ink drawing throughout the piece. Rich golden washes establish the warmth of the leopard’s coat, while carefully placed dark markings, delicate line work, and loose passages of grass create an image that feels both highly observed and spontaneous.
At 40 inches wide by 27 inches tall, this is an unusually large-scale watercolor painting. The generous dimensions allow Aaron’s marks, washes, and anatomical drawing to be experienced with an impact that smaller studies simply cannot reproduce.
About the Painting
Aaron Blaise has spent decades studying big cats and other wildlife, developing a deep understanding of animal anatomy, locomotion, gesture, and behavior.
In this piece, the leopard is shown in mid-stride. The lifted paw, flowing line of the back, and sweeping tail create a strong sense of movement, while the turned head gives the animal a quiet alertness and presence.
The combination of watercolor and ink allows Aaron to move between loose, expressive passages and remarkably fine detail. The leopard’s spots, facial features, whiskers, paws, and musculature are carefully articulated without losing the energy of the original drawing.
